We are pleased to announce the opening of our updated exhibit, It Happened Here: Remembering Three Lynchings, at the Maggie Nightingale Library, Poolesville, Maryland. Join us for the opening reception on Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 6-8 pm.

The exhibit memorializes and honors the three men who were lynched in Montgomery County—Mr. George W. Peck in 1880, Mr. John Diggs-Dorsey in 1880 and Mr. Sidney Randolph in 1896. The exhibit has been expanded from its first presentation focused on the Rockville lynchings and now includes the story of Mr. George Peck, lynched in Poolesville. It is part of a larger initiative to educate and engage our community in acknowledging the history and legacy of lynching and racial terrorism in our county.

As highlighted in the Montgomery County Council Proclamation of September 26, 2021, this exhibit “reminds us of our responsibility to understand our history and to work to repair and heal the damage of the past by acting in the present."

Working closely with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, and the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project, MoCoLMP is part of a larger effort to advance the cause of reconciliation in Maryland, advocating for public acknowledgement of these murders and working to honor and dignify the lives of the victims.

The exhibit will be open from Sept. 22 through Oct. 3, during regular library hours.
